StarSense: the fully automated telescope for retrofitting - available for Celestron and SkyWatcher telescopes
The fastest and easiest way to enter the fascinating hobby of astronomy
The STAR SENSE module turns a telescope that wants to be operated into a robot that operates you. Apart from typing in the observation location and local time once in the evening, you don't have to do anything else. The camera eye of the StarSense shoots three images of the sky after the telescope is turned on. This takes about 3 minutes. After that, the device knows where in the sky which stars, planets, galaxies and gas nebulae can be found and shows them to you at the push of a button! It even suggests the most beautiful objects in the sky. You really don't need any previous knowledge to become an amateur astronomer on the very first night with this fantastic new technology. 40.000 celestial objects are stored!
Even experienced amateur astronomers will appreciate the inexpensive StarSense module. StarSense replaces expensive software and provides excellent horizon-to-horizon positioning accuracy thanks to any number of calibration stars. And of course, you can use the short time the telescope does the alignment procedure automatically to prepare for the night.
StarSense for Celestron is compatible with all current computer-controlled Celestron telescopes, as well as many older models. See the list below; a mount firmware upgrade may be required.
StarSense on azimuthal telescopes
On azimuthal telescopes - including motorized Dobsons - the StarSense module can perform to its full potential: There is no need to zero in, you just need to set up the device under a clear, dark sky with a clear all-around view - at least three quarters of the sky should be clear to view the night sky. Then you just enter the date, time and location as usual - even that is not necessary for devices with built-in GPS or the optional SkySync GPS receiver.
The StarSense camera then looks around the sky, and after about three minutes it has enough data to create a model of the sky. Then all you have to do is select the objects you want to observe from the hand controller's extensive databases. If you were surprised by good weather and had no time to prepare the observation night, this is no problem either: The TOUR function suggests the most beautiful objects visible at the moment.
You only have to observe yourself - what could be easier?
StarSense on parallactic telescopes
The StarSense module can also be operated on parallactically mounted telescopes (such as Celestron Advanced VX, CGEM, CGEM DX, CGE Pro). With fixed mounts, you then have the same luxury as with the azimuthal mounts.
But if you operate the mount mobile, you still have to align it - after all, the tracking axis has to be parallel to the earth axis. But the StarSense module helps you with that, too: If you have only roughly aligned the mount (i.e., you have brought the telescope to the start position and see Polaris in the viewfinder) and turn on the StarSense module, the telescope will look for the reference stars - if you use more than just two reference stars, you can increase the goto accuracy for visual use. Or you can then invoke the AllStar polar alignment, known and proven from the Celestron NexStar control, to align the mount to another reference star - since you have to turn the mount's adjustment screws to do this, the StarsSense module can only help here. But you save the tedious kneeling under the polar finder and can still set up the mount accurately enough for photography - convenient and easy. The subsequent re-alignment is then performed independently by the StarSense module.

Notes:
Please note that an update of the motor controller firmware may be necessary for StarSense to be supported by the mount. For this you need the Motor Control Update Software, which you can find linked at the respective telescopes under Downloads, or you can download it directly at Celestron.com. Unfortunately, it is not possible to upgrade older (unsupported) mounts to be compatible with StarSense.
If your Schmidt-Cassegrain does not come with screws of sufficient length (8-32 UNC, 1/2 inch), we offer a screw set (part no. 889001) - this applies mainly to the NexStar-SE units. On EdgeHD telescopes, the base mounted on the telescope can be used; on the other Celestron telescopes, the second finder base from the StarSense module delivery fits into the finder shoe.
If you own a Sky-Watcher telescope with SynScan mount, you need the "Celestron StarSense AutoAlign for Sky-Watcher SyncScan" (part no.: 22463) !
