The compact high-performance telephoto
The new LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 1:2/75 mm ASPH. complements the range of telephoto lenses in the Leica M system with a model that is as powerful as it is fast, and at the same time particularly compact.

75mm - The universal portrait focal length
With its more natural perspective than a 90 mm focal length, in which the depth of space is reproduced in a less condensed form, it is ideally suited for many applications such as reportage and portraits - especially in rooms of smaller size.

Its small dimensions result not only in excellent handling but also in a Leica M viewfinder image that is largely free of shadows, thus allowing completely undisturbed viewing of the subject. Whether stopped up for selective "cropping" of decisive parts of the subject or in high-contrast available light - very common application situations with such focal lengths - or stopped down for sharp reproduction of extensive subject areas, the LEICA APO-SUMMICRONM 1:2/75 mm ASPH. is convincing in every situation: even at full aperture, it has high contrast reproduction even of the finest structures. This performance can be increased only slightly by stopping down. The very low distortion of only 1% should also be emphasized. Vignetting, which is normal for fast lenses at full aperture - in this case up to approx. 1 f-stop in the corners of the image - is further reduced by stopping down: at 2.8 it is already negligible - except for the outermost corners - and at 5.6 it is also negligible in the corners. The use of the most advanced coating technology and additional measures for matting the inner frame parts also ensures a high degree of freedom from reflections.

The optical design consists of seven lenses in five groups. As with the recently introduced Summilux 50 mm ASPH., this is a new variant of the double Gauss Lens, in which the first three lenses correspond to the typical Gauss construction. The elements behind the diaphragm are also very similar to the Summilux 50 mm ASPH. - except for the use of a single lens instead of one of the putty elements. To achieve the high imaging performance, glass with anomalous partial dispersion was used for color correction (lenses 2/3). Lens 2 is made of a fluorite-like glass, and lens 3 even uses a
glass whose origin goes back to the former Leitz glass laboratory. Lens 4 is equipped with a pressed aspherical surface. In addition to the aspherical surface, glass with very high refractive power was also used (lenses 5/6) to minimize monochromatic image aberrations.

Highest image quality from near to far
To maintain the outstanding imaging performance down to the near limit of 0.7m - the Summilux-M 75mm reaches only 1m - a so-called floating element was used, as was already the case with the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH. This last lens element (lenses 6/7) changes its relative position to the rest of the optical system during focusing. While the basic technique is well known from SLR lenses, Leica designers had to develop a novel, extremely precise adjustment mechanism for its realization in a compact M Lens with its very limited installation space. Only its use allows the advantages of this design to be fully exploited, while at the same time ensuring the smooth, easy and absolutely backlash-free focusing familiar from M lenses.

Quality down to the last detail
A feature that has now become standard for Leica Lenses has also been adopted for the new LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 1:2/75 mm ASPH: The built-in lens hood, which protects against stray light or dirt, can be locked in the extended position to prevent unintentional retraction.

Conclusion:
By using all the means available in lens technology today - an aspherical lens, glass with anomalous partial dispersion, glass with a high refractive index, a floating element together with a novel, high-precision adjustment mechanism, as well as the most advanced coating and elaborate measures to reduce internal reflection - it has been possible to create a Lens that complements the Summicron-M series and thus also defines a new standard in this focal length class.

In the group of now four fast M telephoto lenses with focal lengths of 75 and 90 mm, the new LEICA APO-SUMMICRON-M 1:2/75 mm ASPH. represents an ideal combination of several properties: It combines the highest imaging quality with high speed and compact dimensions. Together with its moderate telephoto perspective, this results in almost universal applicability, and therefore, together with a wide-angle lens, it can form an extremely versatile mini-complete kit.
