Canon EOS RP

Canon EOS RP - The next generation in the world of the EOS R

With the introduction of the EOS R system in September 2018, Canon took the first step into the new full-frame mirrorless system. A completely new lens bayonet and a more compact body, as well as new RF lenses awaited Canon fans. Now a second camera model of the EOS R system, the EOS RP has been introduced. Canon is thus launching a full-frame mirrorless camera aimed at full-frame beginners. A similar, but newly optimized, sensor as in the proven 6D Mark II finds its place in an even slimmer body. In this article, you will find out the highlights of the new EOS RP, the differences to the EOS R and the advantages of a mirrorless system.

The EOS RP at a glance:

When we look at the pictures of the new EOS RP, we notice that the camera is comparatively compact. It weighs just 440 grams, or 485 grams with battery and SD card. As already known from its big brother, the EOS RP is again equipped with a comfortable grip. Photographers with larger hands in particular miss the feel of compact system cameras such as the Sony Alpha series or the Fujifilm X-T3. It is also immediately noticeable that the EOS RP has a rotating and swiveling display that can be folded out to the side of the body. A very useful feature, in our opinion, and a unique selling point compared to other new cameras such as the Panasonic S1/ S1R or the Sony A6400 as well as other full-frame system cameras.

To buy or not to buy a Canon EOS RP?

Switching to a mirrorless camera system presents many SLR photographers with a wide range of decision-making options. The intuitive operation should be of particular interest to Canon users, as the carefully designed menus of the Canon SLR series can also be found in the EOS R series. Canon photographers will immediately feel at home without any major changes. Previous Canon EF lenses can of course continue to be used in full on the EOS RP with the adapter. The good news is: the lens adapter is already included with the camera! You want to take the next step in your photography and you have the feeling that your camera is limiting your skills? Have you ever shot with a Canon camera and felt comfortable? If so, then you should definitely take a closer look at the Canon EOS RP!

RF lenses for EOS R

Technical specifications or not, a great camera is all well and good, but it's the lenses that really matter. In addition to the new camera, a range of lenses has also been announced. However, Canon is only referring to a development announcement & published a roadmap of which RF lenses will be coming in the next few years.

Previous Canon RF lenses

In addition, there are of course the existing RF lenses. The most interesting is certainly the RF 28-70 mm F2 L USM. The standard zoom impresses with a continuous aperture of f:2.0. There is also an RF 24-105 mm F4 L IS USM which will be a very good travel zoom with image stabilizer and two fast fixed focal lengths: RF 50 mm F1.2 L USM and RF 35 mm F 1.8 Macro IS STM. The latter also has an image stabilizer and special features for macro photography. Here, too, we can see that Canon has designed the R system for the highest demands, as three of the four lenses belong to the infamous Canon L series.

The adapter

Existing Canon photographers can rejoice, because there is a very flat and uncomplicated adapter for Lenses with EF and EF-S mount. This is simply placed between the camera and lens and extends the lens options to a huge selection. The adapter is available in several versions: Canon lens adapter EF-EOS R, with control ring, with drop-in filter circular polarizing filter and with Drop-In Filter Variable Neutral Density Filter. There are three matching filters: Canon drop-in filter for lens adapter EF-EOS R circular polarizing filter, Clear filter and Variable Neutral Density Filter,
