Guide to the best compact cameras 2024
Reading time: 5 minutes - July 31, 2024 - by Markus Igel

The best alternatives to the Fujifilm x100vi +amp; Co.

The hype surrounding compact cameras is greater than it has been for a long time, and TikTok is perhaps to blame for this. But if you are desperately looking for an alternative to the Fujifilm x100v or Fujifilm x100vi that is much better available, we want to introduce you to the best alternatives here. First of all, we'll tell you the "advantages" or rather: the reasons for an x100vi.

What makes the Fujifilm X100vi so special?

  • Film simulations
  • Limited to a 23mm fixed focal length
  • Good open aperture
  • Hybrid viewfinder; real through-view (rangefinder), with optional display viewfinder
  • Built-in ND filter
  • Limited to one Lens
  • Iconic design

Something that we will not find in other camera models is the viewfinder. It shows more than just the final image. The camera shows the real frame of the final shot within the viewfinder. This has the advantage that the photographer can see the surroundings while framing. You don't find this in other cameras where you can see the projection of the sensor image through the viewfinder. At the same time, you have to imagine the angle of the final shot due to the off-centered position of the viewfinder. This takes some practice, but is not impossible to learn, or rather to get used to.

History of the X100VI

  • Fujifilm X100
  • Fujifilm X100S
  • Fujifilm X100T
  • Fujifilm X100F
  • Fujifilm X100V

Fun Fact: Here Fujifilm has laid an egg for itself in the naming of the camera models, as the cameras were first named after the English numbering, but then the change to Roman numbering took place.

Our best Fujifilm X100vi alternatives from Fuji!

We know that we can't really cover the iconic design and the viewfinder with any alternative, but we want to introduce you to the technically comparable models here. Because here you will find many interesting cameras that give you the opportunity to finally take pictures with a compact camera, or to hold a camera in your hand before your next vacation.

If you can't find what you're looking for in our recommendations, take a look at our entire range:

All compact cameras

Fujifilm XF 23 f2 WR

This lens is the basic building block of the X100 series, but without the aperture ring, which is built into the body of the Fujifilm X100. This makes the Lens slightly more compact than the normal fixed focal length shown here.

Fujifilm X-T5

The X-T5 is the more compact version of the X-H2 and offers the same autofocus as the X100vi sensor. The only difference is that the X-T5 has a different body design and the option to change lenses. It is slightly larger than the X100vi. This is due to the handle and the position of the viewfinder. Otherwise, it also offers the film simulations and a better tilting display.

Our test report

Fujifilm X-S20

The smaller X-T5 is one of the Fuji cameras that is one of the best alternatives for the X100vi. The technical changes to the camera are in the autofocus system: The AF system used here is from the X-T5 and X-H2; however, Fuji has used the old sensor from the X-T4 for the X-S20 and has therefore only delivered 24 megapixels, which is not a bad thing and offers a better sweet spot in terms of autofocus performance, especially in low-light situations. It is cheaper than the X100vi, even with a Lens, and there are very few functions or gimmicks: The hybrid viewfinder, 40 megapixel sensor, no built-in electronic ND.

In terms of shutter speed, the X-S20 also offers "only" 1/32000 instead of 1/180000 like the X100vi, but realistically you don't need that in a camera like this. The battery of the X-S20 is larger than the battery of the X-T50 and lasts correspondingly longer.

Fujifilm X-T50

The X-T50 is the successor to the X-T30. It is a few millimeters smaller than the X-S20, but also offers the functions around the film simulations; even super accessible in the form of a quick change wheel on the top of the camera. It is certainly interesting as a good and solid alternative to the X100vi.

Our hands-on report

If you don't want to buy a new camera, you can also take a look around our second-hand range, where we always have a wide variety of Fujifilm items:

Our second hand range

Our best Fujifilm X100vi alternatives from other brands!

If you're not just interested in the film simulations alone, then here are some exciting camera models from other well-known manufacturers that we don't want to withhold from you. Because we think they offer many features, some of which are similar to Fujifilm's film simulations, or they offer other exciting aspects that will help you take great pictures.

Panasonic Lumix DC-S9 + Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary

The Panasonic Lumix S9 is a very compact camera that goes beyond the usual "rules". It has no viewfinder, but is available in four different colors: red, blue, green, black! It is lightweight and uses a 24 Mp full-frame sensor with mechanical sensor stabilization. But that's not even the "killer feature" of this camera: the camera also offers an attractive app concept that makes editing images child's play. In addition, there is also the option of playing ready-made "looks" (similar to the film simulations) directly onto the camera. However, these are much more powerful: LUTs offer the option of completely rearranging the colors. If you are interested in this now, we explain more about it here in this article: Color grading with LUTs

Our test report

Leica Q3

The Leica Q3 is the finest compact camera on the market. It has a full-frame sensor. With a 28mm Lens and the 60 megapixel sensor, the camera offers a very strong starting point and is the even higher quality version of the Fujifilm X100vi. However, it is also significantly more expensive than the Lumix S9, which is hardly surprising given the individual price of the Leica optics.

Our test report

Ricoh GR III

The GR III is one of the most flexible cameras in the compact camera range. There are many different versions, such as the GR IIIx with a different focal length or the HDF version, which has a muck filter for the highlights. This can be added as an option. With its 24 megapixels and super compact pocket size, the camera is perfect for use on the go.

Our test report

Sony Cybershot DSC-RX 100 VII

Sony's Cybershot is a compact camera that has a zoom and is very similar to classic compact cameras. It is particularly suitable as a "vacation camera"; with a zoom of up to 200mm, it gets very close for most shots and also offers 4K video. This, and the swivel display, also makes the camera a very good everyday companion for vlogs and co. With the zoom, it is again a little further away from the approach of limiting itself to one focal length, but this can be an advantage, especially when traveling to cities, if you want to achieve further or different perspectives without having to cut into the image in post-processing.

The right accessories play the music

Our conclusion

The fascination of the Fujifilm x100 series has become very legendary in recent years. It owes this not least to the analog film recipes popular with Fujifilm, but also to the viewfinder, which, although it is a digital camera, enables analog work, which also differs from classic SLR photography. But if your main focus is not on the viewfinder or the electronic ND filter, then we have already mentioned some exciting alternatives in this article. However, if you are looking for a camera with better availability than the Fujifilm x100vi, then the X-T50 and X-S20 are the perfect choice!
