  • excellent image quality
  • elaborate stray light reduction
  • precise manual focus
  • Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating
Points of light in the background surround the subject and hide a mysterious message. The Planar T* 1.4/85 brilliantly stages its subject and skillfully plays with sharpness and blur. The classic portrait Lens stages characters in their surroundings, which can be extremely sharp, blurred and rich in contrast. The typical circular bokeh plays an important creative role here.

Floating Elements Design
Modern camera technology and high-resolution digital image sensors demand ever greater performance from Lens. The modern Floating Elements Design compensates for imaging errors of Carl Zeiss SLR Lens at different distance settings. This is achieved by changing the axial distance between individual lenses or lens groups. The adjustment of the lens distance is linked to the distance setting so that the correct correction is always achieved. The mechanical structure of these lenses is very complex and the processing must be particularly precise - both of which are Carl Zeiss' specialties.

Excellent image quality
Carl Zeiss T* Lens offer the highest possible level of performance, reliability and, of course, image quality. In other words, they are superior in every respect. For example, extremely advanced stray light reduction is available for razor-sharp and brilliant images. And the virtually non-existent geometric distortion ensures precisely accurate reproduction of shapes - which is particularly useful in product and architectural photography.

Sophisticated stray light reduction
Rich and vibrant colors are crucial for a lasting image impression. However, stray light within the Lens would lead to a brightening of the image, which is particularly visible in shadow areas. The image contrast is reduced and the image appears dull and washed out. To reduce the unwanted stray light, we combine various sophisticated techniques. For example, all lenses are coated with the famous Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating. In addition, all lens edges are painstakingly finished by hand with a special deep black coating to prevent reflections from occurring in the first place.

Precise manual focus
Operating a Lens manually means controlling the image result from your fingertips. Ergonomics is everything. The Carl Zeiss SLR Lens impresses with its large angle of rotation, which enables precise focusing to the point. Changes are immediately visible in the viewfinder. The high-quality focusing mechanism runs smoothly and without play, thus additionally supporting intuitive play with the focal plane.
The precise engraving in meters and feet as well as the depth of field scale offer additional help when focusing manually.

Carl Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating
All lens surfaces of Carl Zeiss SLR Lens are equipped with the T* anti-reflective coating and an optical design that produces brilliant images even in unfavorable lighting conditions. To anti-reflect the lens surfaces, we apply very thin transparent coatings to their surfaces. For this purpose, special substances are vaporized one by one in a high vacuum with very high energy, which are then deposited on the glass surface as layers with precisely controlled thicknesses and produce the desired reflection reduction. The first coatings were used by Carl Zeiss back in the 1930s.
